Coalers supporting Rare Disease Day

Rare Disease Day is Feb. 28, and the Coal City School District will participate in the observance of this day to bring awareness of the more than 6,000 identified rare diseases, and to support the 300 million people living with a rare disease—including individuals who attend our schools and live within our community.

A rare disease is one that affects fewer than one in 2,000 people, and it's reported 70 percent of these diseases start in childhood and 72 percent are genetic.

Coal City Middle School teacher Angela Roudis is coordinating this year’s observance. As a fundraiser, the school is selling T-shirts and sweatshirts featuring the Rare Disease logo and national theme, “More Than You Can Imagine,” to be worn on Feb. 28.

Students, staff and the community are invited to participate by purchasing an item or making a donation. All proceeds and donations will go to assist a local family with its medical and travel expenses.  All shirt orders are due by Wednesday, Feb. 19.
